FILM AT A GLANCE

Four things to know about Niu Lai.

01

What it is

An 86-minute Chinese animated feature released nationwide on 5 August 2026 (animation release permit 2024-33). It follows Niulai, a newborn calf unable to stand: inside a dream brought by a desert skylark, he lives through an entire coming-of-age journey — making a friend, suffering loss, learning responsibility — and after waking, he finally stands on his own.

02

What happens

The dream is the story's main stage. The timid calf befriends Baola, a leopard rejected by the herd, joins the herd's migration, and faces wolf attacks; his mother stays behind to protect him, and he grows from the protected into the herd's leader. As a cattle-capture truck corners him at a cliff, he wakes — his mother is alive, and the courage from the dream remains.

03

Who made it

Director Xin Yumeng handled directing, production, and voice acting solo; her mother Sun Lifang wrote and voiced it. Per public reporting and the director's own account, the film took about five years to make with no AI elements, used second-hand equipment, took no outside investment — a family-workshop film that still reached national cinemas.

04

Why it spread

Opening day earned just RMB 342, under RMB 10K in ten days; then mockery of its rough visuals and viral remixes flipped into reverse-sightseeing. By 20:10 CST on 27 August, realised cumulative gross had reached RMB 52.820M. Virality proves attention, not quality.

CHARACTERS

See the characters clearly, then follow Niulai's growth.

Niulai grows through his mother, his friend, and the threats around them. Baola is not the villain; he is the crucial friend. Select a portrait to enlarge it.

04

The desert skylark

A small bird arriving from the desert, and the witness through whom the audience enters the dream.

05

The wolf pack

The pack pursues the herd and forces its migration, making Niulai confront loss and responsibility for the first time.

FULL PLOT · ENDING INCLUDED

From being unable to stand to truly standing up.

This is the complete arc: the skylark enters a dream and witnesses Niulai move through fear, friendship, loss, and responsibility.

  1. 01
    CHAPTER 1

A skylark in the desert; a calf who cannot stand

The film opens with a skylark crossing the desert before reaching the grassland injured. There it meets newborn Niulai, whose legs cannot support him. His mother keeps calling “Niulai” — naming him and urging him to rise. The reality is simple: before any adventure can begin, the calf must somehow take a first step.

  2. 02
    CHAPTER 2

The skylark enters a dream that rehearses a lifetime

Niulai and the skylark fall asleep, and the story moves into a long dream where animals walk like people. The bird becomes a witness following Niulai from childhood toward adulthood. The dream rehearses everything reality has not yet given him: fear, friendship, prejudice, loss, and responsibility.

  3. 03
    CHAPTER 3

A grass snake and a river: moving while afraid

Young Niulai is bitten by a rope-like grass snake and panics at anything that resembles it. He is also terrified of crossing a river, yet forces himself to leap. These blunt trials make the film's idea clear: courage does not erase fear; it is the choice to move while fear remains.

  4. 04
    CHAPTER 4

Meeting Baola: a friend first appears as danger

Niulai meets Baola, a young leopard surviving without his mother. Baola's tail reminds the frightened calf of a snake, so they begin warily. When Niulai learns that Baola is starving, he asks his mother to help; she eventually feeds the leopard her milk. Suspicion gives way to the film's central friendship.

  5. 05
    CHAPTER 5

The herd distrusts Baola, and prejudice defeats warning

Baola repeatedly helps Niulai and tries to warn the cattle, but the herd sees only a predator and refuses to accept him. Niulai now faces a harder question than any physical obstacle: when everyone distrusts the friend you believe, will you still stand beside him?

  6. 06
    CHAPTER 6

Wolves force migration and turn adventure into survival

A wolf pack pursues the cattle and forces them to migrate. Baola diverts the wolves and searches for food while Niulai and his mother struggle onward. Every delay can now cost a life, and growth begins to mean making choices for other people rather than merely surviving alone.

  7. 07
    CHAPTER 7

His mother stays behind; Niulai becomes a leader

Unable to continue, Niulai's mother stays behind to protect him and the herd, and the wolves kill her. Niulai is no longer only the child being protected: he grows into the herd's leader and fights beside Baola. “Standing up” has become a moral act of carrying responsibility.

  8. 08
    CHAPTER 8

Human capture, the cliff, and the waking first step

A human capture vehicle becomes the final threat. Baola stays behind and his fate is not made explicit; Niulai leads the herd away before reaching a cliff and darkness. He wakes on the grassland: his mother is alive, his father and herd are there, and he finally stands by himself. The deaths were dreamed, but the courage survives into reality.

WHY IT SPREAD · WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Roughness became the joke, curiosity became box office, and opinion stayed divided.

Tiny early grosses, remixes, and irony lowered the barrier to joining in; coverage and check-in viewing amplified attention while craft remained heavily criticised. Virality proves attention, not quality.
